Born in Norway in 1968 to Scottish parents, Kevin Gordon immigrated to Australia in 1980 where he trained as a glass engraver under the tuition of his parents, both qualified, internationally renowned glass artists and engravers. He has refined his skills as a glass artist/designer in collaboration with master glass blowers in Victoria and Western Australia. Gordon has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Europe, USA and Asia and his highly individual glass pieces are sought after by collectors and Museum curators throughout the world. Two of his major pieces were purchased by the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. He has been a finalist in the Ranamok Glass Prize six times and has been awarded the Ranamok ‘People’s Choice Award’.
Kevin Gordon is represented in several major public, corporate and private collections nationally and internationally including, The Artbank Collection; Wagga Wagga National Glass Collection, NSW; Devonport Gallery Glass Collection, Devonport, Tasmania and Latrobe Valley Glass Collection, Latrobe University, VIC.
Kevin Gordon’s unique and evocative glass vessels have multi layers of coloured glass engraved with the repetition of mysterious objects, profiles and figures. He fuses layers of glass, with engravings and incised prisms and lenses to trap and transmit light and colour. The prisms are influenced by fractals and the ‘Mandelbrot Theory’ where the image is composed of smaller reflections of the whole. Gordon’s preferred technique of engraved cameo glass, popular in nineteenth century France, is used by few glass artists in Australia because of its technical complexity and lengthy production time. His work is a journey – an exploration of colour, optical movement, and light. The closer you look the more readily you see elements repeating in the same way cycles recur in nature - ferns and trees growing, ice forming on a window pane.
