About the Exhibition

Accompanying this solo exhibition of paintings is the launch of Geoff Dyer’s new book.

A Tasmanian Perspective: The Art of Geoff Dyer is a 160 hard cover book profiling the life and work of Geoff Dyer, including images of Dyer’s work spanning his career from 1969-2008. Contributors include former professor of Australian literature, Peter Pierce and Melbourne based curator and writer, Damian Smith. Published by Lygate Press Australia, 2008.

Geoff Dyer’s recent paintings are infused by the power and majesty of the natural world, marking him as a witness to the ever-present landscape at the heart of the Tasmanian experience. Over the past decades he has covered much ground, taking in locations from the west coast through to the rugged islands of Bass Strait, and the dense timbers of the Franklin River. In recent years, however, his work has become increasingly abstract. Dyer’s ability to extract beauty within a seemingly barren and arid landscape bears testimony to his talent. His paintings are considered wonders of serenity and beauty, presenting a true celebration of Australia’s iconic landscape.

Geoff Dyer was born in Hobart, Tasmania. He studied at the Tasmanian School of Art. Dyer has been exhibiting in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally since 1970. In 2003 he was awarded the prestigious Archibald Prize for his portrait of Richard Flannagan. In 1995 he received an Art Gallery of New South Wales Work/Study Scholarship for Cite Paris, France.
