Congratulations to Andrew Baldwin, Lou Pendergrast-Mathieson and Emma Varga, finalists in the 2008 Ranamok Glass Prize. This award has played a major role in achieving significant links and paths within this field of visual arts and it remains the major focus for Australian and New Zealand contemporary glass.
‘The ‘figures’ I have created refer to my impression when approaching a temple or place of worship. They hint at the peaceful experience of Zen gardens and the quiet of meditation.’ Andrew Baldwin
‘This work aims to express my continued interest in the decorative embellishment of objects. These remnants that I use to ‘dress’ the pocket form work as referents and symbols of rekindled moments, be that person, time or place. I am interested historically in the aesthetic value of the pocket as a timeless functional/non functional design feature and its concealment/appearance in relation to the wearer.’ Lou Pendergrast-Mathieson
‘At age 35, with the help of a close friend, psychiatrist, keen to explore sources of creativity, I discovered my own primary picture (which determines one’s visual preferences). It is a complex image capturing a significant and breathtakingly beautiful moment when I was 4 months old. It can be described as: white, blue, shine, light. Now, while creating ‘Vapours and Light’, I came the closest (so far) in expressing ‘shine & light’ from my primary picture.’ Emma Varga
